2024-09-07-Our worst ever tomato crop - only produced tiny tomatoes
This video was taken over a couple of days during the last week. Something strange has happened with our tomato crop this year. The tomatoes that have been produced are unlike the ones I'd normally expect to be produced by varieties I've grown for many years. I think it's probably our worst crop of tomatoes ever!

This year has been very good for potatoes. I'm not sure why I'm assuming conditions were just right when they needed to do most of their growing. I've including some weather details during the time they were growing. The crop was also free of any pest damage.

I continued lifting potato out of our very hard nd dry ground. I was sure that these potatoes were Sagitta but they weren't. If I'd check my plan first I would have known that they were Nicola so my apologies for the confusion in the video. However it was an extremely good crop despite the ground conditions.

We also had a look at our annual flower bed which has turned out to be a big disappointment.

    The significantly colder & more overcast start to the growing season seems to be the problem. I usually pick my first tomatoes (Sungold) in the last week in May but this year, it was the third week in July & small too. I'm only just now getting ripe, larger tomatoes (Moneymaker, Roma, Shirley & Red Zebra). Blight's been showing too of late.

    • @greenfingers41
      @greenfingers41 2 дня назад

      The odd thing about our tomatoes is that the ones grown outside and presumably in colder conditions than our greenhouse tomatoes have produced a better crop. I take your point though that June and July were cool and must have had something to do with the crop.

  • @billvalsallotments5915
    @billvalsallotments5915 3 дня назад

    Our outside tomatoes been total rubbish took ages to get going and produced much smaller fruits than normal, ones in greenhouse doing far better but found the skins tougher this year

      Hi you two, we are the opposite way around to you. Our outdoor tomatoes have done better although I wouldn't say they've done very well.

  • @DaisyDebs
    @DaisyDebs 3 дня назад

    Same here with smaller than normal tomatoes. I'm convinced it is something to do with the compost that I used . Hopefully next year will be better . I noticed a beautiful fuchsia there in your garden . White outer petals and purply blue under petals ...that's a beauty ! Give Ruby a cuddle from me 🐶🩷

    • @greenfingers41
      @greenfingers41 2 дня назад

      I used the same compost as previous years so I'm not sure why we had such a poor crop. The fuchsia is growing in a large tub but it has grown very large this year taking over part of the lawn. Ruby will be pleased to get an extra cuddle.

  • @MS-ku7tl
    @MS-ku7tl 4 дня назад

    Our tomatoes were poor this year as well. Ours was due to the early heat and dry, warm summer we had. Even with watering to keep them alive they didn't set much fruit.

    • @greenfingers41
      @greenfingers41 4 дня назад

      Sorry to hear that. At least you have some idea on what caused your poor crop. Ours didn't set fruit either or not very much and that's when I just left them to grow as they wanted. I just kept them watered.

  • @silentallotmentgardener

    Everything seems to be very late this year. Mine are only just coming into fruit now. In complete contrast the beefstake plants have been amazing so far. Do you not thin and de-leaf at all?

    • @greenfingers41
      @greenfingers41 4 дня назад

      Normally I remove any side shoots but don't remove any lower leaves. I tended to give up looking after the plants this year when the flowers didn't set any fruit. I've used more or less the same growing method for the last 40 years without any problems.

      Hi you two, it's our best crop of potatoes for a good number of years. Will have to give some away! A bit odd to see the Pongo beans climbing through the sweetcorn. I don't know why either it must just be the way we grow them or the growing conditions that affect them. It's gardening there doesn't seem to be any hard and fast rules otherwise it would be easy. They still produce beans though.

    Greetings Mr. and Mrs. GreenThumbs, that is a high praise here in Virginia zone 8, state side. Another great harvest, thank you for filming and posting. You two are my green hero's, I dream to grow like you two. What kind of fert. program do you use for your potatoes? N-P-K? Did you have a cooler and wetter than normal spring, what ever normal is these days? I've been growing in zone 7 my whole life, last year the Dept. of Ag. updated our grow zones, I'm now listed as zone 8, warmer. I know that potatoes are a cool weather crop so I guess I have to start spring planting earlier. Thanks again!

    • @greenfingers41
      @greenfingers41 16 дней назад

      I don't particularly use any special fertiliser for our potatoes. Since the UK energy crisis fertiliser became difficult to buy and very expensive. I've used a fertiliser called Growmore which is general fertiliser to use on all our crops. I think our hardiness zone is 9a as our winter temperatures don't normally fall below -6 degrees centigrade. Our spring and early summer was wet and cool his year and the potatoes seemed to love the conditions. It's certainly been one of our best potato harvests.

      I'd like to say that we take a lot of care about the number of eyes we live on potatoes at planting time but the truth is we don't bother at all. The potatoes just get planted with the number of shoots they have decided to produce. I'm not sure what grow zone we are in but I'm betting it is much cooler than you have through summer. I'll see what I can find out.

      The weeds took over late on in the growing cycle once I'd stopped earthing the potatoes up. I was still a bit surprised by how good the potatoes were given we've had a dry spell of weather. Our potatoes don't get watered as we just haven't got the time.

      Hi you two, we thought International Kidney were rather prone to slugs so haven’t tried them for a while. However, the ground is very dry so perhaps that has had an effect on the slugs. I’d better get them dug up before we get any wet weather. Cold, lots of showers and windy here. Would be nice if summer could begin.

    Oh it's absolutely heart breaking isn't it ! The pigeons here were landing on my nets and the weight of them pushing the net down and eating my kale through the netting ! They figured out how to do this ! I have now made my netting higher with blue water pipe tubing . I didn't know they'd go for the peas either ...with peas it's mice ! It's quite a battle isn't it ! Good luck 🍀

      We’ve spotted them weighing nets down to get at brassicas. Having eaten virtually all our fruit it’s becoming more difficult to find ways of protecting our vegetables.

    Hi Martyn Sue and Ruby this is the year of the wood pigeons there are so many this year, we have had to net our peas or they will strip them by landing on them and flatting them and eat everything

      Our plot neighbours peas have been decimated and he’s given up on them. Waiting to see what happens to the ones we’ve uncovered. We need a gigantic net to cover the whole plot.

    If the potatoes came out so big why not pull rest? They are already much larger than most early potatoes i have seen. Wont they just split at some point?

    • @greenfingers41
      @greenfingers41 2 месяца назад

      I’ve never had a problem with potatoes splitting. I always leave our potatoes in the ground until the skins have set before lifting and storing them. I’ll probably lift the rest over the next few weeks.

    Oh my those potatoes grew a size didn't they and with all the slug problems we all been having they came out lovely and clean ,

      Hi you two, I was surprised at how dry the ground was. I’m guessing that was the reason they were slug free. Perhaps all the slugs have headed to our strawberry patch where they’ve damaged lots of the crop. It will be interesting to see if all the other roots of Ulster Prince produce big potatoes. Luckily the ones we harvested cooked well and tasted very nice.

    Maybe you know it but I'll mention anyway - If you cut down those broad beans that have no beans on them (due poor pollination) and leave a stump, they will usually grow new shoots pretty fast and will flower again.

    • @greenfingers41
      @greenfingers41 2 месяца назад

      That’s an idea. I’ve noticed that our beans normally send up new shoots from the base if we leave them in the ground. Thanks for the tip.

    Hi Martyn Sue and Ruby even down here sweetcorn is struggling as you say down to the cooler days and light , strange your pongo's not doing so well as they dont mind the cooler conditions normally, we had our first new potatoes yesterday along with cauliflower and calabrese very nice , are you growing flaky carrots this season .

      Hi you two, I’m going to try some new potatoes at the end of the week. Some of our Pongos are doing better than others. I’ve got some seeds left so I might try another sowing for a late crop. I’ve not got much to lose. It would be nice to visit the plot and not have to rush to the shed to escape yet another heavy shower.

      Hi you two, we thought from last year that Ruby liked strawberries and were careful to make sure she wasn't snaffling any as we picked them. She's a very good snaffler. Then later when we tried her with one she turned her nose up at it. Luckily the slugs and snails have left us a few untouched berries.
